Health Risk of Smoking

Many chronic disorders such as heart diseases, lung cancer, weakening of the immune system and impairment of vision among many other ailments are caused by smoking. Smokers are also at an increased rate of heart attack and heart disease which holds the top slot in the list of diseases that kill them.

It has been proven that smokes from cigarette contains about 4000 chemical compounds, out of which 200 are extremely poisonous and 23 are carcinogens which confirms the dangers associated with smoking.

Globally, youths and teenagers across the world has joined the euphoria of smokers all around the globe just because they want to feel among a social class, to be bold, cool or happening amongst other peers when they are seen puffing cigarette without minding the health hazards they are inviting to themselves.

Smokers are considered into two main categories; Active and passive smokers

Active smokers are those set of smokers that smokes either occasional or regularly or can be better described as those that puffs cigarette and others that hang out with smokers but don't smoke can be regarded as passive smokers.

Passive smokers inhale smokes which contain toxic substances from active cigarette smokers. This is very dangerous and often leads to severe health and heart disorders.

Smoking often leads to addiction causing many mental problems such as depression, anxiety, sleeplessness and loss of appetite.

Enumerated below are some of the health hazards associated with smoking

Excessive cigarette smoking affects the eyes by causing cataracts, muscular degeneration of the eyes and watering.

Active smokers face a loss in the sense of smell, wrinkles and premature aging as regards their skins and teeth discoloration, stains with the accumulation of plaque and sometimes leads to gum diseases.

Smoking also affects the mouth and throat by inflicting them with cancer of the lips, throat, mouth and esophagus.

Also, to the lungs and respiratory organ of the body is causes cough, flu, shortness of breath, cold among many others. It also causes osteoporosis and fractures in the bone and coronary artery disease and peripheral artery diseases in the heart.

The smoker's male reproductive system can be affected with deformity of sperm cells, infertility and impotence while the women may experience early stage of menopause, cancer of the cervix and menstrual cramps. Women, who smoke throughout their pregnancy periods, are liable to experience premature birth, spontaneous miscarriage, and ectopic pregnancy as well as many risks to the fetus. Since it increases carbon monoxide in the body, the oxygen relaxes and it could therefore lead to certain birth defects.

The immune system is also affected by becoming weak and unable to resist diseases and sometimes leads to stroke.

Statistics has revealed that more than 60% of these group of people (smokers) always die of smoking related causes thus Asthma, tuberculosis and pneumonia and a few other fatal diseases.

These and many other diseases has shown that smoking is very harmful to the body and as the saying goes...bad habits are like soft beds, they are very easy to get in but equally very difficult to get out. The best natural way to stop smoking is to quit.
